Muhammad Ali: 5 lessons of wisdom for great success

Success ? One word, different meanings. Everyone has his own definition of success. It is subjective. For a student, it would be passing exams. For a house wife, helping her 2 kids get in bed at 9P.M. For a corporate executive who has 20 years of experience in the same corporation, the real deal is becoming the CEO. But the real definition is self-expression. Doing what you want to do. Going where you want to go. And being who you want to be.

Muhammad Ali is widely known as the greatest boxer of all times. He is also one of the most influential people besides Malcolm X and Mandela. His life philosophy is one of a kind and deserves some explanations.

For that, you will find below 5 of his most inspirational quotes. Quotes that can serve everyone. And life lessons that can help you attain the success you really want.

   1- Self-confidence

It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.”

You need to stop being an object and become a subject. Stop being a patient and become an agent. Stop being a consumer and become a producer. Stop conforming and start performing from now on. How ? Start with believing in yourself. Once you believe in yourself, everyone will believe in you.

In his quote Muhammad Ali gives us a great tip to help us do just that. Ali was known as the greatest. He was never considered an underdog in boxing even as a beginner. For he always repeated to the whole world that he was the Greatest of all time. Ultimately, he became one. 56 wins and 5 losses only.

   2- Hard work

I hated every minute of training, but I said, “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”

Stop whining and do something with your life. Be real with yourself. Make some efforts. Plant some seeds. Wait for it. Then reap the fruits, watch the money pile up, get the loving you deserve, the connections that you want, the power, the status. You name it. If you really want it you can make it.

No real self-made man will tell you it was a piece of cake. It was easy. It was nothing for me. No true achiever would make that big lie. Especially not Muhammad Ali. The 3-time heavyweight world champion and olympic gold medalist. A sales person should practice her/his sales pitch. A tennis player should practice her/his game. A developper would practice her/his code. Just practice your craft whatever it is and forget about it.

   3- Learning

A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.”

The best way I can think of to learn something is reading. If you read all the books in the world, you will find solutions to all the problems in the world. But you don’t have to. You can focus on your own problems only. Libraries are filled with diamonds for you to reach out to. In order to succeed you should read.

Most people read one book a year. Unfortunately, it’s the same book. And it’s called Facebook. Reading about miscellaneous topics. And miscellaneous often leads to nowhere. On average people spend 3 hours a day on Facebook. If you have hours for Facebook a day, you can speat at least 10min for a book a day. For one straight month, that’s 1 book a month, 12 books a year and 120 books in 10 years. More than most people can handle in a lifetime. Readers are leaders.

 4- Individuals

Friendship… is not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”

Your environment is very important. And the people you surround yourself with is more important. You are the sum of your surroundings. Who are your leaders ? Who are your friends ? Who are your best friends ? The best people bring the best out of you. You can’t choose your family. But you can choose your friends. Do not settle for default friends. To change your reality you need to change your mentality. And to change your mentality you need real leaders.

Social media has made it so easy to find new friends. You can contact the best leaders in the world. The best authors, thinkers, economists, scientists and philosophers. They are only one click away from you. Just contact them and get their feedback and help. You need them and they need you. So go for it.

5- Goals

“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.

As human beings we need to set higher goals for ourselves in order to get motivated. However, a lot of people prefer to follow the same old processes. They prefer to conform with the majority. For instance, New year’s resolutions are never achieved because no plan of action follows. Bucket lists or what you might call dead lists are worse as there is no sens of urgency in it.

How about a small tweak ? The 20 ideas method. Ever heard of it ? All you need is to choose one big goal. And try to think of 20 ideas related to your goal which would allow you to achieve it. For example, to be a public speaker :

  1. Talk to myself while using gestures in the mirror;
  2. Use an offline dictionary in my smartphone
  3. Learn about communication skills using books and YouTube (ex: Ted Talks)

You can come up with 1000 ideas if you want. You just need to take from what you have to get what you want. You already have what it takes to be successful. Just believe in yourself to let others believe in you. As Daniel ALLY says in his Ted Talk below. Think big. Do big. And you’ll win big.

Ps: BIG referes to Daniel’s BIG method. B for Books that you read. I for individuals that you meet. And G for goals that you set.
